What is Thai Yoga Massage?
Thai Yoga Massage (TYM) is an ancient healing art that has its roots in the Indian systems of Ayuverda and Yoga. It was bought to Thailand some 2,500 years ago and was used to treat the Thai Royal Family. During the massage, the therapist uses their hands, elbows and feet to apply pressure to certain points on the body and to carry out assisted (passive) yoga stretches. The massage is very meditative, with the therapist practising metta (the physical application of loving kindness) and mindfulness during each session.
How it works
TYM is based on the theory that wellbeing and optimum health depends on energy flowing freely throughout the body. When we are blocked energetically, we experience discomfort, illness and disease. TYM works to release blockages in our energy system by working on the sip sen (or 10 sen), the major energy lines of the body (although the TYM system actually recognises around 72,000 energy lines). Through manipulation and assisted stretching, TYM seeks to remove blockages, allowing energy to flow freely again, restoring a sense of emotional and physical balance, increasing energy levels and inducing a sense of calm and wellbeing.
TYM treats ailments such as headache, knee pain, back, shoulder and neck pain, premenstrual tension and others. The treatment improves flexibility, relaxes, restores and energises.
TYM is a full body massage, starting at the feet and working all the way up to finish with a head massage. Oil is not used during the massage, except (if the client likes) for the final head and neck massage. The client lies on a comfortable mat on the floor and is fully clothed throughout the massage. A full Thai Yoga Massage lasts around 2 hours.
Everyone experiences TYM differently, some people report feeling immediately energised, others feel a deep sense of relaxation and stillness. In all cases, the full benefit of the energetic rebalancing takes up to a week to manifest.
